Games and Scoring

Games

  • Puzzle—clues, riddles, puzzle pieces, hide and seek; emphasizes mind strength more than physical strength.
  • Collection—scavenger hunt, capture the flag.
  • Relay—sequences, easy to get everyone involved, most used game element that can be made ability specific.
  • Tag—paintball, laser tag, freeze tag, and dodgeball are all tag type games, tag usually = elimination, different ways of being tagged makes this game type interesting and prop friendly.
  • Goal—kickball, baseball, soccer, football; emphasizes teamwork and offensive and defensive strategies.

Scoring

  • Fastest/slowest—primarily work with time
  • Most/least—primarily works with things or props
  • Points—assigns values (and therefore priority) to various objectives.
  • Accuracy—bull’s eye, goal posts, nets; all create scoring based on accuracy.
  • Finish—line or accomplishment; has a pass or fail flavor.
  • Honorable mention / penalties—although they do not determine the score, they do impact scoring.

Additional Thoughts

  • Games often combine several of these elements but normally have one area of
    emphasis or foundation.
  • People enjoy making a choice (strategy)—the interaction with others making a choice which requires that I rethink my choice is the essence of a game; this strategic interdependence is what makes games enjoyable and what people talk about at the end of the game.
