Holding the LINE

As we managers work with people, we must faithfully hold the LINE with them.

Be sensitive to their Limitations—everyone has them, and everyone’s is different than yours. Maybe it is health, ability, or knowledge; be careful not to expect everyone to be just like you.

Go Individual—spend some individual time with each of your co-workers. If it has been several months since you have had a one-on-one, you are missing important information.

Remember their Names—use your co-worker’s name often. Mention names every chance you get.

Compliment their Effort—if the only compliments you hand out are for those who get it exactly right, you are missing a whole area that needs your attention. Effort is one of those things that you want everyone in your organization to give. So, even if the result of the effort is failure, make sure you compliment the effort. Then deal with the failure: make sure you do not compliment the failure, just the effort.

Your leadership will be appreciated more if you hold the LINE.
