Goals vs. Objectives
by Walt Brock
What is the difference between goals and objectives? In my opinion, there is not much difference; however, there is considerable room for differing opinions. The way I make a distinction for our ministry is that I consider goals to be a specific statement of a desired result within an established time frame. Goals are
broader in scope than objectives, which I view as steps to goal accomplishment. Usually good objectives start with action verbs such as to provide, to develop, to initiate, or to establish. Thinking of goals and objectives in this way helps me to do a better job of sequential planning.
Let me tell you the secret that has led to my goal. My strength lies solely in my tenacity. —Louis Pasteur
Give me a stock clerk with a goal, and I’ll give you a man who will make history; give me a man with no goals, and I’ll give you a stock clerk. —JC Penney
There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all. —Peter Drucker
